Alto is a Par 72 measuring 6102m, it is idyllically situated in the western Algarve in Alvor, less than an hours’ drive from Faro airport. This is the last course designed by the legendry architect Sir Henry Cotton, and features the 600m Par 5 known as the “Sir Henry Challenge”. The Alto course with the stunning Monchique mountains as its backdrop, runs through two valleys and features winding fairways and gently undulating greens. The front nine offers stunning views of the bay of Lagos, and the back nine is set against rolling slopes. This course tests low handicappers, but also provides an enjoy game for players of average ability.
Gramacho is a Par 72 measuring 6107m, it is located in Carvoeiro, 45 minutes west of Faro Airport. This is one of the few courses that has 18 holes and 27 greens, and as it boasts numerous tee points you can enjoy the same course again and again but with slightly different challenges. It played host to the 2005 Portuguese Ladies Open, but this championship course is enjoyable for players of all abilities. There are many exciting features on this course including dry stone walls, fig, almond, carob and olive trees, not to mention lakes and bunkers, which all go to make it an enjoyable round through the countryside.
Silves is a Par 70 measuring 5615m, it is located in Silves, 45 minutes west of Faro Airport. From most tees, golfers can enjoy the stunning surroundings of the Monchique Mountains. The first hole has water hazards on either side, so a straight drive is required from the off. Silves has a good selection of holes, the Par 3s are a great test of target golf. Several of the holes are risk and reward holes, one of the most memorable is the Par 5 13th, which with its elevated tee, it offers a chance of going over the lake for two and a chance of an eagle, or go round with a mid-iron. An enjoyable course for all abilities.
Pinta is a Par 71 measuring 6154m, it is located in Carvoeiro, 45 minutes west of Faro Airport. This Championship course has a superb layout with great views of the surrounding countryside and it has hosted the European Seniors Tours 8 times. Most of the Par 4s and Par 5s are dog legs, and so put major emphasis on driving accuracy. Water hazards come into play on four holes of the front nine, which adds to the overall challenge. This is a beautiful course with strategically placed bunkers, fig, almond and olive trees and ornamental lakes.
Morgado is a Par 73 measuring 6399m, it is situated in Portimao, 55 minutes west of Faro Airport. This is one of the longest courses in the region and will certainly be a favourite with the big hitters, although it can still be enjoyed by players of all levels. The course offers stunning views of the Monchique Mountains and is set amongst valleys, rivers, vineyards and woodlands. The front nine features fairly flat fairways, the back nine has more hilly terrain, but they both have strategically placed deep bunkers and large trees. This is a superb golf course and is an excellent choice when travelling to the Algarve.
Álamos is a Par 71 measuring 5641m, it is situated in Portimao, 55 minutes west of Faro Airport. Although shorter than its sister course, Morgado, don’t be fooled, with its tight, tree lined fairways this is a challenging course for all levels of players. Although there are very few bunkers, they are all strategically placed and the large greens demand good putting skills to negotiate the many different levels. This peaceful, rural course enjoys spectacular views over two large water reservoirs, vineyards, an orange grove and the Monchique mountain range.
